Central Taranaki – Freedom Bike Hire – do your own thing

Enjoy the freedom, hire a bike and head off from Eastern Taranaki Experience, 5 Verona Place, Stratford. We are located close to a bush walkway, which is a great beginning to explore our town. Map and suggest route offered free of charge.

Cost $25.00 per bike for half day – $40.00 full day
We also offer a guided cycle tour of our town, pointing out features and history of Stratford – 14kms and approx. 2-3 hours. $60.00 per person, includes coffee and cake stop at a local café

Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

Pre-planned Routes:

- Lake Rotokare: Cycle from Stratford to the beautiful Lake Rotokare 25km (one way). We'll pick you up afterwards, and you can even enjoy a walk around the lake. Picnic lunch available.

- Matau Tunnel: A scenic 34km (one way) ride from Stratford, with a convenient pick-up at the Matau Tunnel.

- Makahu: Total of 40km. Cycle the first 30km of the Forgotten World Highway, turning at Strathmore and continuing to Makahu via the Makahu Tunnel.

- Cape Egmont Lighthouse: We'll transport you to the Lighthouse (60km), and you can cycle back to Stratford via Wiremu Road.

- Pukeiti Gardens: Enjoy a relaxing trip to Pukeiti Gardens, with time for coffee and a stroll. We'll pick you up in Okato after your cycle.

- Whangamomona: For the more adventurous, this 64km ride to Whangamomona offers a well-deserved drink at the end, followed by transport back to Stratford.

LAKE ROTOKARE

Rotokare Scenic Reserve is 230 hectare bush reserve with a lake in the middle. Located 22kms from Stratford it is protected with a predator proof fence. The walk around the lake is 4.5kms and easy grade. People and bikes transported to the reserve and you bike back. The walk is your choice.

Let us enhance your experience with a guided walk around the lake – even though this can be completed independent we will show you ‘extras’ and inform about the history of this unique place and hopefully answer any questions $10.00pp (as a donation to the trust)

DAWSON FALLS TO STRATFORD

People and bikes transported to Dawson Falls road end (950m ASL), bike back to Stratford at 300m ASL (28kms) at your own leisure (mostly down hill) a 650m overall descend

Visit Hollard Gardens and Possum Factory on the way – free entry into both

PLATEAU TO STRATFORD

People and bikes transported to Plateau road end (1200m ASL), this is the highest road in Egmont National Park, cycle 19km back to Stratford (down hill all the way) – 900m overall descend
Stop at Mountain House for coffee on the way and a small board walk to swamp, wetland area pointed out on the way up.

EGMONT NATIONAL PARK EXPERIENCE

min 2; be transported to Mountain House, walk through to Dawson Falls (2.5 hrs moderate grade) Pick up Dawson Falls return to Stratford or bikes delivered and cycle back to Stratford.
